Are you ready to make a real difference in the Yorkshire Dales?
The Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association (UWFRA) is looking for new volunteers to join our dedicated team.
What We’re Looking For
- Hill skills: Confident navigating the hills in all weathers and across all types of terrain.
- Caving: Not essential, but experienced cavers are always welcome.
- Local knowledge: A good understanding of the Dales is a real advantage.
- Availability: Able to respond to callouts at any time – day or night, whatever the weather.
- Training commitment: Around two training sessions per month, covering rescue techniques, equipment use, navigation, rope work, and casualty care.
- Team involvement: Monday evenings at the Hut for equipment checks, plus participation in fundraising and community events.
- Commitment level: A minimum of 75 hours per year.
- Personal: You must be over 18, fit, and in good health.
The Recruitment Process

- Interview: Shortlisted applicants will be invited to our team base for an informal chat about your skills and suitability.
- Assessment Day: Take part in practical activities designed to test your knowledge, ability, and approach.
Training & Progression
- Pre-Probation (6 months): Focused training on navigation, stretcher handling, rigging, and first aid, while we assess your personal skills and progress.
- Probation (12 months): You’ll join the active callout list, train alongside the team, and demonstrate your commitment and teamwork.
- Full Membership: With consistent attendance, completed training, and proven teamwork, you’ll be approved as a full member of the team.
