Mountain Rescue Awareness Day – Training in True Yorkshire Style
Sunday 26th October marked Mountain Rescue Awareness Day — and in true Dales fashion, it began with scraping ice off car windows and ended in horizontal rain!
The UWFRA team spent the day honing their cave communication skills, using radio sets to send text messages between underground teams and surface control. Above ground, rebro sets were tested between hill teams, control in Kettlewell, and our base in Grassington — making sure every message gets through, no matter the terrain.
These skills are essential during rescues in places like Dow Cave and Dowbergill, where reliable communication can make all the difference.
Even after training wrapped up, the day wasn’t over — every piece of kit had to be washed, checked, and dried, ready for the next callout.
A huge thank you to everyone who gave up their Sunday to train, test, and prepare — whatever the weather.
