An Evening with Yorkie Talkie Outdoors
Last weekend, Team UWFRA was invited to join the Yorkie Talkie Outdoors group during their weekend in the Dales. They’d asked if we could come along and chat a bit about what we do in mountain rescue — and in particular, about the recent events at Dowbergill.
Our Training Officer and Technical Rope Specialist, James Thompson, kindly took on the talk. The evening was held at the hostel in Kettlewell, and it turned out to be a brilliant night.
Around twenty or so walkers gathered after dinner, full of questions, stories, and enthusiasm. It wasn’t just a one-way talk — it turned into a really engaging discussion. People were genuinely curious about how rescues unfold, what to do if something goes wrong on the hill, and how our team trains and responds when the call comes in.
James shared both practical advice and a first-hand account of the Dowbergill incident, giving everyone a real sense of what happens behind the scenes in those challenging situations.
The group were fantastic — keen, respectful, and clearly passionate about the outdoors. It’s always rewarding to meet people who love the hills as much as we do and want to stay safe while exploring them.
A big thank you to Yorkie Talkie Outdoors for the invite and the warm welcome. Evenings like this remind us how much we all share the same goal — enjoying the outdoors while looking out for one another.
