Training Visit to Yorkshire Air Ambulance
Over the weekend, our volunteers from UWFRA had the privilege of spending a day with the Yorkshire Air Ambulance team for familiarisation training. It was a valuable opportunity to learn more about how we can work safely alongside Helimed aircraft during callouts.
What We Learned
The main focus of the training was on safety and teamwork. We practiced selecting appropriate landing sites, carried out basic marshalling, and learned the correct way to load a stretcher into the aircraft. These skills may sound simple, but in the middle of a rescue, every detail matters. Understanding how to work around the helicopter confidently helps keep both crews and patients safe.
We were also shown the simulation room, where YAA crews practice resuscitation scenarios using medical mannequins. These exercises are designed to reflect real-life emergencies as closely as possible. While we didn’t take part ourselves, it was impressive to see how the crews train for such critical situations. ⚠️ Please note: some of the footage from this visit shows realistic medical practice, which some viewers may find upsetting.
Why It Matters
Working with the Yorkshire Air Ambulance is a vital part of what we do. When someone is seriously injured in remote or difficult-to-access terrain, helicopters can make all the difference. For our team, being able to prepare a safe landing zone, assist with patient transfer, and support the air crew is an essential part of our role.
Training together ensures that when we’re called out, we can work seamlessly as one team. It also helps build trust and understanding between our volunteers and the air ambulance crews, which is invaluable during high-pressure situations.
A Warm Thank You
We are incredibly grateful to everyone at Yorkshire Air Ambulance for welcoming us, sharing their expertise, and making the day such a positive experience. It was a fantastic chance to strengthen our partnership and to learn directly from their highly skilled team.
From all of us at UWFRA: thank you to The Yorkshire Air Ambulance, You’re always welcome at our Hut anytime.
